INSPIRING
YOUNG WRITERS SINCE 1993
Haere mai o Te Kura Kaituhi RangAtahi
Welcome to WRITE ON School for Young Writers
We are a not-for-profit organisation founded in 1993 and based in Christchurch, New Zealand, offering tuition and mentorship to young writers.
We also publish Write On Magazine, full of writing by New Zealand's talented young writers and publish writing and voices online on Write On Speak Out.
Ko te ahurei o te tamaiti ka ārahi i ā tātou mahi
Let the uniqueness of the child guide our work.
We aim to build a writing community that supports the hauora /wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi, gives them agency through writing and amplifies their voices through publication.
At Write On, we know that providing opportunities for young writers to explore and to be supported in writing their ideas onto the page leads them to realisations about themselves and the world they live in. Our classes focus on the teaching of writing with inclusivity and hauora as essential pou/pillars to all of our mahi.
Our classes include Saturday classes, Workshops in Schools, Masterclasses, Holiday programmes, Online classes and specially targeted projects.
Writing gives young people a voice!
We offered young New Zealand writers the opportunity to give a voice to their thoughts and ideas about Lockdown 2020.
Then, in 2022, we gathered Voices for the Planet.
In 2023, we visited Voices from the Past (ex-students) and the Present.
In 2024 and 2025, our Fresh Voices project has broken down barriers to provide access to free Write On workshops and publication support to young people in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Waitaha Canterbury and Rēkohu/Wharekauri Chatham Islands.
Voice recording is supported by Plains Media.
WRITE ON SPEAK OUT

WRITE ON
MAGAZINE
Write On magazine is full of poems, stories and articles by young writers aged 6–18. It’s a great read, a superb resource for teachers and a welcome addition to any school, community or family library. We'd love to hear from schools about how they use their copies to inspire more young writers!
