Unless indicated otherwise our masterclasses are open to young writers in Years 7-13

1. Activating Villain Mode Years 7-13 

 

Learn how to write a "good" villain your readers will love to hate!

Create a complex and compelling character who is powerful, proactive and probably unhinged!

2. Getting Creative with Non-fiction Year 7-13

Did you know that nonfiction can be fun to write and read?

Explore the boundaries of fiction and non-fiction as we  focus on what's in the news 

and create compelling personal narratives.

3. Micro Magic Year 7-13

Crafting the tiniest of stories requires precision, close attention to detail and sentence sorting...

...as well as allowing your imagination to burst into a sudden flash of light!

Enter your fabulous micro stories into one of the NZ Flash Fiction competitions.

4. Speculative Fiction Year 7-13

Pick a current issue and speculate where this might go in the future.

Guide your characters to finding solutions amidst the chaos.

This workshop will focus on developing key scenes and scenarios for your next spec fic novel!

Your Tutors

Shelley Robinson is a former journalist, deputy editor and editor.  She has finished her first poetry book with a fantasy book hot on its heels. She mentors writers and teaches well-being courses to participants from around the world.

 

Josiah Morgan (Kāi Tahu, Ngāti Maniapoto) is an actor, drama teacher, performer, facilitator, reviewer, editor, publisher, poet and writer. The Spinoff has named him "One of Aotearoas' finest young writers"!

Desna Wallace is a librarian, blogger, book reviewer, author and poet. She loves short-form writing, verse novels and teaching young writers.​ She is an award-winning writer of microfiction.

Heather McQuillan is an award-winning writer of novels for young people, short stories and flash fiction. She has published four books for middle-grade readers and has a new (dystopian) YA book coming out in March 2025.

All of our masterclasses are fully supervised, with Health and Safety information provided. Teacher supervision is not required.
