Worms at Summer Writing School

Inspired by Mel Dixon's workshop on animal protagonists "Speak for the Worms", our young writers created these haiku in five minutes! We thought they were wonderfully wormy enough to share!

You’re a dirt crawler,

A mucky little slithery thing,

What an important creature you are

Rebecca

Squelchy slimy worms

Eating its own poo

Hiding from the birds

Kate

Those slimy, small, strange creatures,

We ignore them, we stomp on them,

What did they ever do to deserve that?

Kaylee

Pink worms wriggle

Tunnelling through the soil

Waiting for the rain

Grace

The rain will come each emerald spring

Worms will gather along the pavement

to greet the damp with playful writhing

Remy

Iridescent dance in dirt

Slither tiny snake

Escaping rain

Hannah

Slimy wimey, wormy slirmy,

Fighting for space in the expanse

Of dirt and leaves

Jessica

Delving, deep in soil

Gifting life to fading land

Soul without troubles

Amanda

Squirming writhing thing

Pink poking through fresh dark soil

The makers of Earth.

Bonnie

Squigly little strings

Long squirmy, pink

Squishy little things

Ari
